“Why do we ask why?”
had been why I’ve come to seek for answers, or at least so I thought.
While I was reading Hobbs to prepare for a one-hour session on my lead, I let the questions that naturally flowed out - Why was Hobbs so power-obsessed and so cynical about human nature? Why are we reading this thick book full of numerous people none whom has the same understandings with any other? Why is every single one different? What is history of philosophy? What is history? How shall we learn history? What is philosophy? How shall we learn the history of philosophy?
I couldn’t really answer to any of those questions. So I looked up on the internet about the definitions and disciplines of history and philosophy, from which I failed to really understand how to learn either history or philosophy, not to mention the history of philosophy. So I gave another round of questions. Only that this time, it was more personal.
This is what I exactly wrote down about ten days ago:
Why do I want to learn history?
A. To understand all better.
How can I understand anything?
A. By pure observation and holistic examination on external and internal events and experiences with the least prejudice and the most depth, width, height, and length.
How can I have such little prejudice?
A. By having the least sense of selfness. By forgetting my Self.
Is it possible?
A. With Love, in Love, by Love, for Love, and as Love, I believe it is.
What do you mean when you said, ‘depth, width, height, and length’?
A. The length might of time. The height might be of position. The width might be of diversity. And the depth might be of meaning. But this might be just a personal interpretation, with sense of Self involved. So I do not know. The four measures are from the Bible.
Then why Love?
A. Love knows no why, how, what, when, or where. I believe if there is why for Love, it would be for Love. If there is how to Love, it would be to Love. I don’t know what, when, or where Love is, but whatever it is, whenever it is, and wherever it is, we Love Love. And that is why I think Love is and embraces all the height, width, length, and depth. But first we must forget our own Self.
Isn’t it hard?
A. It would be as hard as rejecting one’s own Self. But it would be as joyful, beautiful, and complete as Love.
What do you do to do it better?
A. Pray Love. And Love. I personally got much help from the Bible. And by simply just trying to see how to truly help others, I forget about my Self, and how great it feels! I could live with that feeling forever. I wish I could do that more often. So I pray when I try to Be.
How to do history?
A. As precious as the lives of the past are, for we can learn what made people so hard to choose Love, choose Self, and conflict with other Selves, my personal desire is to learn about Love experiences of the past. And I hope and pray Love be with me along this journey of discovery. And also hope and pray that Love stops anything that is, does or works against.
I’ve been living by this way of beliefs for only a little while, and got to learn new things. But forgive me; I’m not there yet..
